Elon Musk is pouring an unprecedented flood of cash into the final weeks of the midterms to aid Republican candidates. According to a pre-election report filed by his political committee with the Federal Election Commission, the group received more than $76 million from Musk during the first two weeks of October. The committee has spent nearly $43 million during that same timeframe and currently holds close to $47 million in reserves.

A significant portion of this new capital has been directed toward the Texas Senate race. The committee allocated $15.2 million to that contest in just two weeks, which matches the amount spent there throughout the entire summer. This funding includes $12.4 million aimed at attacking Democratic candidate James Talarico and $2.8 million to promote Republican Ken Paxton. Additionally, filings show that $11.4 million of this spending was dedicated to digital advertisements. Overall, Musk has contributed over $445 million to Republican groups for this cycle, including more than $165 million to this specific committee since July.

The political battle in Texas remains extremely competitive, with polls showing the race as a toss-up. An Emerson College poll conducted October 17 to 19 found Talarico at 48 percent and Paxton at 46 percent, figures that sit within the margin of error. Talarico responded to the spending spree by stating, “There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator.”

The consequences of these races extend well beyond individual state outcomes. Lawmakers positioned to lead House committees have indicated they intend to investigate Musk’s involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency, his companies' federal contracts, and potential conflicts of interest. Furthermore, Democratic representatives have written to the White House requesting an investigation into restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service in Ukraine, stating that the next Congress will closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to his businesses.
